An erection can be enhanced through many different means. There are a number of medications that have been developed to treat erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis). These medications improve blood flow to the penis, making it easier to attain and maintain an erection. Other medications, such as imipramine and phentolamine, are sometimes used to relax the smooth muscles around the penis, helping to produce an erection.

Lifestyle changes can also improve erectile function. Eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and avoiding excessive alcohol and tobacco use can help to improve blood flow to the penis. Psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, guilt, depression, and low self-esteem can be addressed through cognitive-behavioral therapy and other psychological treatments.
